A Cryer elevator is used to remove a distal mandibular molar root after the coronal portion of the septal bone has been removed to expose the mesial root surface. The elevator tip engages the exposed surface, and rotational force is applied to luxate the root, sever the periodontal ligament, expand the alveolar socket, and facilitate extraction. Cryer elevators are available in various designs for different clinical applications.
