Elevators are used in both human and veterinary dentistry. They are a necessary and essential part of tooth extraction. Their job is to sever the periodontal ligament and expand the alveolar bone around the tooth particles. A dental elevator is a simple surgical instrument that consists of only three parts- the handle, the shank, and the blade, which is at the tip of the tool. This blade is used to cut through the periodontal ligament. Elevators are used before extracting the tooth, so it becomes easier for the forceps to do their job. If you try to remove a tooth without using an elevator first, then you risk tooth fracture. It will also cause an extreme amount of pain, which is unbearable. Elevators loosen up the tooth perfectly so it can be easily extracted afterward.
Different Types of Elevators
There are three main types of elevators in dental surgery. Each one of them has its uses.
Periosteal Elevator
These periosteal elevators are used before the extraction process begins. They are used to clear the working area from gingival coverings.
Apexo Elevators
These types of elevators are used to extract broken root particles from the alveolar bone. They have unique and narrow working ends that make them suitable for working in limited spaces between the bones and root to luxate them. The apexo elevators are further divided into 3 types. Each of them serves its unique purpose.
Crossbars
These types of elevators are used to remove the impacted mandibular third molars and mandibular molar roots. They are further divided into three types according to their respective uses.
Veterinary Dentistry
Like us humans, animals also get problems in their oral cavities. These problems include tooth decay, swollen gums, tooth infection, fractured tooth, etc. The field which deals with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of such dental problems in animals is called Veterinary dentistry. There are hundreds of veterinary dentists in the country available to take care of your pet’s oral health. If you find out that your beloved pet has bad breath, swollen gums, yellow teeth, excessive drooling, or any other unusual problems, then go take them to a vet immediately. The vet will see where the problem lies and propose a suitable treatment plan for the poor animal.
Veterinary Dental Elevators and their Characteristics
Historically, the elevators and luxation used in animal dentistry were the same that were being used in human dentistry. The techniques and procedures used to extract teeth in animals are a little different from humans. Vets prefer their veterinary dental elevators with long shanks to get more leverage. These instruments are available in various types and sizes to suit the vet’s needs and comfort.
Essential Types of Elevators used in Veterinary Dental Procedures
Feline luxating root elevators: Various types of elevators are being used in veterinary dental procedures. These include feline luxating root elevators used to lift the tooth from the periodontal ligament without damaging the near tissues.
Holmstrom Modified Elevator: These elevators are used to pull and lift the periosteum to loosen up the tooth for easy extraction.
Molt Periosteal elevator: It is used to retract the periosteum after the removal of gingival tissue.
Inside Curved Elevators: These elevators are usually used to extract incisors and canines in small animals such as dogs and cats.
Slimline Elevator Short Handle: It is a convenient tool used to detach the periosteum from the bone. This tool is produced from high-grade German stainless steel.
Root tip elevator: These elevators are used to loosen up root tips so the tooth can be extracted with comfort and no pain.
Spade Elevator: This type of elevator is specially used to cut the periodontal ligament in the PDL space. Its safety design ensures there is no damage to nearby tissues and teeth.
